We will carry out a readability check on your leaflet or website once we’ve received your completed patient information proposal form. Patient information should be written in plain language and with an appropriate layout that the reader will find easy to navigate. The average reading age in the UK is between 9-11 years of age – so think about whether someone with that level of literacy will understand and retain what you’ve written. Click here to see a helpful example showing how to simplify information and make it suitable for this literacy level. Please amend any patient information you’ve written to take account of the following before you submit your information for a readability check. Information not written in this way will be returned for you to review.
(see the CDC’s Plain Language Thesaurus as alternatives to medical terms, phrases, and references)
e.g. ‘change the dressing every day’ NOT ‘the dressing should be changed every day’
e.g. I/we/you
(approx. 6 max.)
